The British Museum - Lower Niger Bronzes research project

Cast copper-alloy figure of a huntsman with a dog and antelope. Unknown date. William Fagg identified this piece as a Lower Niger Bronze, however it is believed to be part of the objects looted by the British in 1897 from Benin City.

The West African Bronzes Research Project began at the end of 2019 with a focus on the Lower Niger Bronzes held in the British Museum’s collections. It’s central aim has been to bring together critically needed documentation work with archival and provenance research to form collection histories and object biographies.
